What is Home Health Care?

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services define home health as the following: Home health is a wide range of health care services that can be given in your home from an illness or injury. Home Health care is usually less expensive, more convenient and is just as effective as care you get in the hospital or skilled nursing facility.

What do home health services include?

Examples of home health services include the following:
• Wound care for pressure sores or a surgical wound
• Patient and caregiver education
• Intravenous or nutrition therapy
• Injections
• Monitoring serious illness and unstable health status

Is Home Health Covered By Medicare?

Yes, Medicare covers 100% for home health.

How Do I Start Home Health Services?

A doctor’s order is needed to start care. Once your doctor refers you to home health services, the home health staff will check your eligibility. The home health intake coordinator will schedule an appointment to have an RN case manager come your home to talk to you about your needs and ask some questions about your health.

What Should The Home Health Staff Do
When They Come Visit Me?

• Check what you are eating and drinking
• Check your blood pressure, temperature, heart rate and breathing
• Check that you are taking your prescription and other drugs and any treatments correctly.
• Ask if you are having any pain
• Check your safety in the home
• Teach you about your care so you can take care of yourself
• Coordinate your care. This means the home health care worker must communicate regularly with you,
your doctor and anyone else who gives your care.
